A Trip to Plains - 9/1/8 - Labor Day

We decided to go to Plains, Georgia - home to a former president. We weren't sure what to expect, but the journey there was a step back in time. There was hardly anyone on the road, for one thing. All country back roads to get there - very quiet and peaceful. All kinds of homes scattered thru the countryside, from shacks to mansions. Several old cemeteries next to old churches.

Lunchtime when we got there, and we weren't sure if we would find anywhere to eat - but we hit the one restaurant in town and it was open. By the way, the city center is one block long. This is truly a 'small town'. Maybe Mayberry even. Had homemade meat loaf, turnip greens, zipper beans(must be southern, never heard of these before - Randy/Gail - did we understand how she pronounced it?) cornbread pancakes, mashed potatoes, pecan pie, sweet potato pie, and drinks. Whew, and that was lunch!

Afterwards we wandered thru what there was of the town. Ernie bought a bag of peanuts. One of the shopkeepers said that Mr. Carter rides his bike in to town (with a few seret service people) and sometimes Rosalynn. He said this former president is assigned 36 secret service men, who work in shifts 24/7. I guess the former pres still gets threats and such, esp. when he makes a visit to a foreign country and someone doesn't like it. Visited the Jimmy Carter Museum, which was actually really interesting.

So that was our day and tomorrow on to Florida and hoping we don't encounter a hurricane!
